Malta Athletics Calendar: October 2009

Friday, October 02, 2009

As part of a new feature here on MaltaAthletics.com, at the start of each month we shall be looking at the athletics (and triathlon) events taking place on the island (islands, if there's something in Gozo). This month, with the track season now over, we see an increase in road races much to the joy of the long distance runners.

Oct 3: St Vincent de Paul 5km
One of the most popular races on the island, the SVDP 5k has built a reputation for being extremely well organised and with a wide selection of prizes that, thanks to the luck of the draw, go not only to those who finish in the top placings but to anyone taking part. The route starts and ends at the entrance of the St Vincent de Paul hospital and is fairly flat although the climb towards the finish is quite challenging.

Oct 4: ChooseMalta.com National Triathlon Championships
What should be the final act of the Triathlon season plays out next Sunday as the top Maltese tri-athletes challenge each other for the honour of becoming local champions. Dermot Galea and Danica Spiteri start as favourites but they have to fend off the likes of Keith Galea and Michelle Woods respectively in order to win the title

Oct 11: St. Patrick's AC's Gudja 8km
This race is unique for one particular reason: its distance. 8 kilometre races aren't that frequent so this distance adds to the races' novelty value. Being organised by St. Patrick's AC ensures that there is always a good turnout for this race and in recent years there has always been a good post-race welcome for the athletes.

Oct 18: MAAA Road Running League Race 1 (Zebbug 10 km)
The Road Running League is the prime road running event in Malta or, at least, it should be. Organised by the MAAA, entry fees are dead cheap ensuring high participation figures and the races tend to be well organised although controversies about the accuracy of the measurements abound.

Rumours are that the road running league is being revamped and, although the full implications of this might not be seen as from this season, there should be some changes as from this year. The Zebbug 10k, however, should kick off proceedings and this flat route always ensures fast times.
